Lot Essay

The chimneypiece, with Ionic pilasters enriched with foliate arabesques in the late 18th Century Neo-Classical manner, is embellised with a central poetic tablet of 'Cupid chastised by the three Graces', derived from Angelica Kauffmann's painting of the late 1770s, that was engraved by Ryland in 1780, and later modelled by J. J. Spangler for the Derby factory. It is flanked by corn-filled vases emerging from oak and vine-enriched scrolls of acanthus and by festive tablets of Cupid's weapons ribbon-tied among musical instruments.
