Lot Essay

A pattern for a related elliptical pier-table with serpentined legs is published in Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co. The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788 (pl. 65). The exceptional width of this card-table introduces the rare feature of a pair of hinged legs at the back.
