The sitter was the second son of Frederick, Elector Palatine and King of Bohemia, and Elizabeth, daughter of King James I of England. Prince Rupert distinguished himself in the Civil War as a successful cavalry commander and after the Restoration fought in both Dutch Wars becoming First Lord of the Admiralty. The present picture appears to be based on Lely's standard full-length design for a Garter Knight which he evolved in the mid-1660s. Lely's full-length is in the Duke of Grafton's collection.
