TWO MAKUZU KOZAN INCENSE BURNERS
Impressed seal Kozan and sealed Makuzu Kozan sei, Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
The first a celadon-glazed incense burner modelled as a stylised ho-o bird, its head slightly raised and the feathers finely incised, with a wood box inscribed Makuzu-gama seijigusuri torigata shuro Kozan sei [Bird-shaped handwarmer with celadon glaze by Kozan, from the Makuzu kiln], the second of rectangular section decorated in underglaze blue with two handles and raised on four feet, the longest sides with two panels depicting three Chinese children playing in a garden among butterflies and blossoming peonies, and two birds perched on a rock among plum blossom, bamboo and pine, the sides with repeated shippo pattern, the cover similarly decorated with a knop finial modelled as a shishi playing with a bowl, with a wood box, signed Makuzu Kozan saku and sealed Makuzu Kozan and Teishitsu gigein [Artist to the Imperial Household]
