Impressed Makuzu, Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Modelled in the form of an old hat in Bizen style biscuit ware and glaze splashes, a small snail at the side, with wood box inscribed Makuzu-gama yaburegasa (or haritsu) katatsumuri Kozan saku [Broken hat and snail by Kozan from the Makuzu kiln]

This inscription appears to be a pun on the two meanings of haritsu, either literally 'broken hat' or the alternative name of the lacquer artist Ogawa Haritsu (Ritsuo, 1663-1747) who made use of applied pottery in his work and showed a predilection for this kind of subject.
