A RARE SUJI BACHI [ridged bowl] WITH BATTLE DAMAGE
Signed Haruta Yoshi Sada, Momoyama Period (16th Century)
The twenty plate black lacquered bowl with simple concave peak, each suji [ridge] with gilt copper fukurin with igaki at the base and shinodare on front and back plates, simple five stage tehen kanamono and kasajurushi no kwan, five lame small rounded neckguard of iron plates laced in dark blue close lacing, a red lacquered leather flame crest on the front associated, interior with red lacquer

Lot Essay

This fine helmet in its original untouched condition is one of the few examples exhibiting damage which can be believed to be genuine battle damage. The cuts to the left side of the bowl which penetrate the fukurin and the lacquer beneath are totally consistent in angle and position of sword cuts.
