AN UNUSUAL HELMET
Edo Period (18th Century)
The russet lacquered iron bowl of low rounded form with decreasing horizontal ridges, a brow plate embossed with eyebrows and wrinkles and a simple rounded peak, on each side of the helmet are naturalistic human ears and curved gilded wood horns with a simple soft metal fore crest of an inome [boars eye], the black lacquered solid plate neckguard of seven lames with the lower three shaped to widen the normally close fitting defence, laced in dark blue spaced lacing with the interior lacquered red
