The drawing is datable to Bandinelli's early period, which was heavily influenced by Rosso Fiorentino. Some of the figures in this drawing are similar to those in a drawing by Rosso in the Uffizi engraved by Agostino Veneziano in 1517, E. Carroll, Rosso Fiorentino, exhib. cat., National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1987, p. 54, fig. 2a. The main source for the present drawing is probably Raphael's Borghese Deposition painted in 1507 for the church of San Francesco al Prato in Perugia and now in the Galleria Borghese, Rome. Raphael's composition was engraved by Marcantonio Raimondi around 1516.
