Like Polidoro da Caravaggio, Orsi specialised in the decoration of the faades of houses. Other than the now detached frescoes for the Casino di Sopra di Novellara in the Rocca of Novellara, all of Orsi's faade decorations have now disappeared, A. Monducci and M. Pirondini, Lelio Orsi, exhib. cat., Reggio Emilia, Teatro Valli, 1988, pp. 106-10, illustrated. A number of drawings, like the present one, still record these commissions: two drawings are at Windsor Castle (one for the Palazzo dell'Arte della Lana of Reggio Emilia), one in the British Museum, London, one in the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, and one in Berlin, and five projects (not all autograph) for the artist's own house in Modena, Chatsworth, Paris, Princeton and Windsor, A. Monducci and M. Pirondini, op. cit., nos. 8, 9, 14, 95-6, 133, 177-80.
Another faade drawing, not recorded by A. Monducci and M. Pirondini, is at Chatsworth and shows the same type of doorframe as the present drawing, M. Jaff, The Devonshire Collection of Italian Drawings: Bolognese and Emilian Schools, London, 1994, no. 660.
