A SET OF EIGHT GEORGE III MAHOGANY CHAIRS
Comprising two open armchairs and six side chairs, each with a cartouche-shaped padded back and seat covered in close-nailed beige material, the armchairs with channelled downscrolled supports, some replacements, on channelled cabriole legs headed by shells, with scrolled feet, minor variations, one armchair and one side chair possibly associated (8)

Lot Essay

These elegantly-serpentined chairs, designed in the Louis XV manner, relate to the fashionable cabriolet chairs of the 1770s such as Thomas Malton illustrated in his Compleat Treatise on Perspective, 1775, pl. XXXIII, fig. 131. They also relate to a suite of furniture supplied at this period for Erddig, Denbighshire by John Cobb, cabinet-maker to George III.

A related pair was sold by the Executors of the late Julian D. Layton O.B.E., in these Rooms, 19 April 1990, lot 183 and a further similar pair was sold by Archibald Stirling of Keir, Keir Mains, Dunblane, Perthshire, Christie's house sale, 22 May 1995, lot 111.
