During the reign of Paul I, Prince Nikolai Borisovich Iusupov was in charge of the Imperial Porcelain Factory, and in 1814 founded the Iusupov Porcelain Factory on his estate at Arkhangel'skoe outside Moscow, which, in contrast with other private factories, produced articles destined for the aristocracy. The porcelain from the Iusupov Factory was never sold but served as gifts to members of the Imperial and other aristocratic families. Arkhangel'skoe was not a factory in the strict meaning of the word, but a studio where the imported white porcelain from the Svres, Limoges and Popov factories were painted. The reverse of these rose plates indicates the reference book from which it was copied.
