A Composite English Pikeman's Armour
Circa 1650
Of bright steel, comprising characteristic two-piece wide-brimmed pot with low comb (dented and holed on one side), deep gorget of two pivoted plates, heavy breast-plate with low medial ridge, two pivot-hook and pin catches for the shoulder-straps, and a narrow one-piece riveted skirt, back-plate shaped to the back and the base of the neck, with riveted leather shoulder-straps reinforced with iron plates (all replaced) and two-piece waist-strap (incomplete), and rectangular hinged tassets embossed with simulated lames, the breast- and back-plate struck with marks, the breast-plate, tassets and pot decorated with engraved lines, the gorget, skirt, tassets and pot with recessed borders, domed iron rivets and plain turned edges to the main plates throughout

Lot Essay

The mark on the breast is probably the crowned helmeted 'A' used by the London Armourers' Company during the Commonwealth period (1649-50). The mark on the back appears to be 'IC'.
