A LARGE CANTON FAMILLE ROSE BOWL
CHINA AH 1292/1875-6 AD
Made for Maharaja Sindhiya of Gwalior, of deep rounded form with slightly flaring rim on short foot, the gold ground of the interior and exterior covered with a profusion of flowers and butterflies around cusped cartouches containing floral sprays, perching birds and roundels, a similar large roundel in the centre of the interior complete with rocks and fruit, the exterior also with a large cartouche on one side with a lengthy nasta'liq inscription, a smaller similar cartouche on the other side, a band of cartouches alternating with lozenge panels above, all containing inscriptions

Lot Essay

The large inscription panel translates: His highness the autonomous monarch, great in power, the exalted, the glorious, the commander of his times, the best of the nobility, Maharaja Dhiraj Ali Jah Maharaja Jiyaji Rao Sindhya Bahadur Sri Nath, the victorious of his times, the servant of Her Majesty, the exalted Queen of England, the most brave of the nobility, holder of the Star of India, the ruler of Gwalior, 1292.
The smaller one on the opposite side describes this bowl as 'the attempt of Aqa Muhammad Husayn Shirazi, also known as Na Khuda'.

The larger cartouches in the upper register contain a Persian poem in praise of Maharaja Sindhya of Gwalior. The small cartouches with which these alternate contain eight of the beatific names of God.
