Lot Essay

The sideboard table's fluted frieze and plinth-supported 'herm' feet derive from a pattern illustrated in Robert and John Adam's Works in Architecture, 1773, pl.VIII. Its Apollo-sunflower paterae and husk-festooned tablet relate to patterns for sideboards illustated in A.Hepplewhite & Co., The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788. A virtually identical table was sold Christie's London, 8 July 1993, lot 145.
