Depicting with a scene of scholars or officials, their heads covered in red hoods, and attendants gathered in a winter landscape to welcome a newcomer on horseback crossing a bridge, with compounds of buildings nestled amidst low hills at the foot of mountains in the background

Lot Essay

While it is unusual to find such a depiction of a winterscape, C.L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, 1991, p. 189, pl. 91 illustrates a closely related winter scene executed in gouache by Fatqua, dated 1824.
