[SHERMAN'S CAMPAIGNS -- TELEGRAMS]. A group of 68 manuscript notes for telegrams, V.p., [Resaca, Cartersville, Allatoona, and others], 15 August - 21 November 1864. 68 pages, mostly 8vo, nearly all on U.S. Military Telegraph letterhead.
A DAY-BY-DAY RECORD OF THE MOVEMENTS OF SHERMAN'S TROOPS DURING THE ATLANTA CAMPAIGN AND THE BEGINNING OF THE MARCH TO THE SEA.
Nearly all the telegrams are by Brigadier General John E. Smith, but included are communications from General Green Berry Raum, General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick and one from W.T. SHERMAN. 22 August: "It is reported that Wheeler has his headquarters at Athens, Tenn and is destroying the railroad towards Loudon. Is it not probable that he may return by the route he went and dart suddenly upon our railroad. It seems to me that it would be well if a cavalry force could be sent up to Woodlawn where the Federal roads and Westfield Pike unite. I sent scouting parties north to observe the movements of the enemy." RAUM. 7 October: "Left here 3 hours ago for Resaca to bring down carpenters and material to repair the Etonah bridge which can be done tomorrow. Gen'l Corse is here with his command on his way to Rome a brigade of the 23rd corps is at Allatoona with orders to remain. Col. Health scouted the country 200 miles up the river and found no enemy. Gen. Sherman signals that Hood is retreating toward Dallas..." RAUM. 19 October: "General Kilpatrick reports 3 Brigades Rebel Cavalry coming in direction of the RR leaving Van Wert to their left. If you can communicate with General Sherman inform him and say to him that I would like one brigade here as a moveable force." SMITH. 24 [October]: "Keep a guard of one company on the Signal Hill at Allatoona to look out and guard the station I will send 2,500 men over the road tonight bound up and 2,500 men tomorrow to go to Rome to disembark at Kingston."
