FIRST EDITION of Rgis' encyclopaedic exposition of Cartesian philosophy. A native of Languedoc, Rgis was introduced to Cartesianism during his studies at the Sorbonne by Jacques Rohault (1620-1675), the leading advocate of Descartes' natural philosophy among the first generation of French Cartesians. After several months of instruction, Rgis was sent by Rohault to spread the doctrine in Toulouse, which he did with resounding success, moving on later to Aigues-Mortes and then to Montpellier, and returning to Paris in 1680, where his excessive popularity attracted too much attention, and he was forbidden to lecture by the archbishop of Paris. Rgis devoted his remaining years to refuting anti-Cartesian objections and writing this, his master work. A large section is devoted to optics.
