Title, 1p. text (verso blank), portrait of Rubens after van Dyck by J.Audran, 24 plates (3 double-page) after Rubens by Benoit Audran, J.Audran, Duchange, l. de Chastillon, G.Edelinck, Trouvain and Vermeulen. 18th-century French red morocco gilt, arms of Louis XV [Olivier 2495, fer 10] blocked at center of each cover, covers stamped with a wide dentelle plaque border of scrolling foliage and cartouches, arms of Jean de Boullongne, comte de Nogent [this version not in Olivier, but see 2359]in cartouches at corners, crowned double-L monogram [small version of Olivier 2495, fer 29] in border, spine in ten compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with repest pattern of small fleur-de-lys surrounding central crowned double-L monogram [Olivier 2495, fer 29], gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, g.e. (some discoloration to leather, corners rubbed and scuffed, spine chipped, joints slightly split). Provenance: Jean de Boullongne, comte de Nogent (1690-1769, binding).
First edition. The plates, after Rubens, take the form of an allegorical history of the life of Catherine de Medici. The original owner, the comte de Nogent, was the son of Louis de Boullongne, 'premier peintre du Roi', and a succesful courtier and politician in his own right.
