ELIEZER BEN JOEL HALEVI, of Bonn (1140-1225). Sefer Ra'avyah (or Avi ha-Ezri). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER

4o (305 x 195 mm). [8] + [8] + 413 + [1] blank leaves. Dark brown ink. Several Ashkenazic semi-cursive scripts of the sixteenth century. Fols. 296-299 in what seems to be an eighteenth-century hand, with marginal notes, a few blanks inside the text. (Some staining and browning, generally good condition.) Modern blind and gold-tooled brown morocco.

Fols. [1]-[8]: various indexes and notes on the text; [1]rv: blank; [2]r: title-page, within decorative architectural frame, probably added in the eighteenth century; [2]v-[5]r: blank; [5]v-[8]v: index, by Zevi Hirsh Levin; 1r-491v: text; 492rv: blank.
The work contains Halakhot and legal decisions according to the order of the tractates in the Talmud. Parts of the work were published from other manuscripts by Ch. N. Dembitzer (1885), V. Aptowitzer (Berlin 1913; Jerusalem 1935), and S.Y. Cohen and E. Prisman (Jerusalem 1965). D. Deblitzki published the previously unpublished tractates Chullin, Zevachim, Menachot, Avodah Zarah and some other laws from this manuscript (2 vols., Jerusalem 1976) and some responsa (Bnei Berak 1989). A single loose leaf with an unidentified halakhic text was found in the manuscript. Two other manuscripts of this work are extant (MSS Oxford, Opp. 66, and London, Montefiore 115), but this is the earliest and most complete copy, and, in many parts, the most accurate.
