VITAL, Hayyim (Safed; 1542-1620). Otserot Chayyim. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER
Copied by Hiyya Cohen de Lara, Amsterdam, 1726
2o (255 x 180 mm). [4 blank] + 266 leaves. Dark brown ink. Sephardic semi-cursive script. (Text space browned, slightly cropped, slightly affecting single letters of marginal commentary, otherwise excellent condition.) Later diced russia leather over bevelled wooden boards, covers blind-panelled with blind-tooled arabesque centerpiece and 4 pomegranate tools at corners, simple gold-tooled floral ornaments in top and bottom compartments of spine, Hebrew letters 'alef' and 'chet' tooled in gold on second compartment of spine, the two leather clasps missing, brass catches preserved (rubbed, corners frayed), red sprinkled edges, four original paper flyleaves at the front, two at the back.

Fols. 1-265v: text Otserot Chayyim by Hayyim Vital. This is the North African redaction that merges parts of Otserot Chayyim and parts of Mevo She'arim (later printed in Livorno in 1849), as attested to by the colophon of the copyist. Cf. Y. Avivi, Binyan Ariel (Jerusalem 1987) p. 59.

With the glosses by Moses Zacuto and Nathan Spira. In the margins, in a different hand, glosses by Naphtali [Ashkenazi], A"A (Abraham Azulai or Abraham ibn Musa) and others. This copyist also copied Neubauer nos. 97 and 117 (lots 111 and 82).
