A 1930s D'Angelico
Serial No. 1076, in sunburst finish, bound maple body, spruce top with f-holes, single sharp cutaway, maple neck, twenty-one fret bound ebony fingerboard with block inlays, headstock face with D'Angelico New York and floral motif inlay, ebony bridge, Grover De Luxe metal tailpiece, bound imitation tortoise-shell pickguard and fitted DeArmond pickup and control unit mounted on pickguard; and a black hardshell contour case stencilled in yellow FRAGILE DEREK AND THE DOMINOS on one side and FRAGILE on the other, the case with green felt lining and Lee Dickson's handwritten D'Angelico S/C 076 and adhesive paper label similarly inscribed

John D'Angelico (1905-1964) was the foremost maker of archtop guitars in the world. Working in New York, he started producing guitars from c.1932 until the 1960s. His handbuilt guitars have been used by many of the world's greatest jazz guitarists from Johnny Smith to George Benson.
