A 1930s D'Angelico Excel
Serial No. 1098, in sunburst finish, bound maple body,spruce top with bound f-holes, maple neck, twenty fret bound ebony fingerboard with block inlays, headstock face with D'Angelico New York and shield outline with Exel (sic) lettering inlay, ebony bridge, Grover De Luxe metal tailpiece, bound imitation tortoise-shell pickguard, fitted DeArmond pickup and control unit mounted on pickguard; and an imitation crocodile-skin hardshell contour case with blue velvet lining and Lee Dickson's handwritten tie-on label D'Angelico Exel (sic) 098 and adhesive paper label similarly inscribed


Eric Clapton commented that this guitar is the first D'Angelico he "got his hands on". He loves these guitars but prefers Gibson archtops to play - he said "...I can't get my head around the idea of custom-made guitars - ie. guitars made by one man..."
