A 35cm. diameter terrestrial table globe made up of twelve chromolithographed gores and two polar calottes, the equator and prime meridian graduated in degrees, the ecliptic not shown, the oceans showing airline, steamship and flying boat routes, submarine cable lines and ocean currents, the North and South Poles with printed hour dials and details of discoveries, the continents with nation states variously coloured according to areas of national possession and showing rivers, mountains, tundra, deserts, mountains, cities and other details, with stamped aluminium meridian half-circle raised on a turned fruitwood column and plinth base with inlaid compass

Lot Essay

The manufacture of this globe can be dated to around 1938/39, as there is an overlaid cartouche in Europe to show the changing political arena. The manufacturer's were able to use recent gores with a small alteration to chart the German expansion at the outset of World War Two.
