The right part of this work by Jonas Zeuner (1727-1814) is after an engraving by Paulus van Liender (1731-1797) of a drawing by Jan de Beijer (1703-1780).
Jonas Zeuner, who hailed from Kassel, immigrated to Amsterdam circa 1750. After having served in the army as a canonnier, he took up his artistic activities around 1750-1770, his first known work dating from 1770. Zeuner generally based his topographical views on drawings or engravings by contemporary artists.
In the present lot one looks over de Singel towards the north at the Roodenpoortstoren near the Torensteeg, with the Ronde Lutherse Kerk in the background. The Roodenpoortstoren was taken down in 1829 (J. Sprenkels-ten Horn a.o., Jonas Zeuner 1727-1814, Zijn wereld weerspiegeld in zilver en goud, Abcoude, 1994).
