Lot Essay

The upper two panels are painted after Travelling musicians from 1642 by Adriaen van Ostade (Haarlem 1610-1685) and Fighting card players from ca. 1635 by Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638). The 'witwerkers', craftsmen who painted the soft wooded furniture, probably never saw the original paintings but used the engravings and other examples which circulated widely.
