Charles, 1st Baron Hardinge of Penshurst

A fine and extensive collection of official and unofficial photographs, depicting the whole course of his viceregal tenure, showing in particular the preparations for and progress of the Coronation Durbar and other events of the royal visit in Bombay, Delhi and Calcutta, as well as viceregal visits and processions throughout India (in particular Bikaner and Gwalior), with images of tiger hunts, elephant drives, garden parties at Simla, and other pursuits, portraits of the Viceroy and majarajahs and with his personal staff, pictures of the antiquities at Delhi, Agra and Fatehpur Sikhri as well as the temporary buildings at New Delhi, a series showing the interior of the Viceregal Lodge at Simla, many inscribed on verso, apparently in Hardinge's autograph, more than 700 photographs in total, approximately 8 x 10cm. - 28 x 36cm.

An extraordinarily evocative collection, forming an almost complete record of the pattern of viceregal life at the turn of the century, both in its most ceremonial official aspects and in its private relaxations.
