Charles, 1st Baron Hardinge of Penshurst
A collection of viceregal and personal effects., including:
Early Victorian shaped rectangular gold fob-seal, the elaborate surmount with urn finial and loop, the cornelian matrix intaglio-engraved with the arms of Viscount Hardinge, c.1840, height 4cm. (some wear to the engraving on the surmount, traces of original sealing wax), with an accompanying autograph letter signed by Baron Hardinge to his son Alec, Penshurst, December 1937, 'it was given me by my father and belonged to him and my grandfather...A matter of trifling interest connected with it is that I have signed three Treaties with it', 2 pages, 8vo.
A general officer's gold and scarlet sheep-backed ceremonial belt with tassels, approximately 90 x 6cm.
A metal paper-knife, the handle quatrefoil form, inset with blue cut glass, engraved 'High Court, Patna, February 3rd 1916' presented at the official opening of the High Court of the newly-created state of Bihar, one of Hardinge's last official functions in India, approximately 16 x 6cm.
Gilt and velvet armorial, bearing the viceregal arms, framed and glazed, 11.8 x 13.2cm.
Three gold sovereigns of George I, George II and George III, mounted in series as a pendant with chain and eye, 13 x 2cm. (one link detached).
A special constable's armband with Metropolitan Special Constabulary Card dated May 10th 1926, approximately 5 x 48cm, with accompanying note 'Police armlet worn by H. of P. as special constable and leader of Flying Squad in London in General Strike of 1926'. (6)
