A history of the province and extensive series of portraits of its aristocracy. The larger portrait shows Sir George E. W. couper, Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces to whome the book is dedicated. The preface states "It is as well, in passing, to say a few words regarding the photographic portraits attached to this work. A likeness of every taaluqdar in the province has been secured at great expenditure of time, labour, and money, and photographs have been given in preference to any other kind of pictures as giving more correct portraitures." In fact several of the photographs show decorative medallions in place of portraits where the sitter had either recently died or was otherwise unavailable. Nevertheless, this book does represent a remarkable achievement in portraiture.
