Lot Essay

The first and most notable of a family of menuisiers, Etienne Meunier had his atelier on rue de Clry. This particular bergre is an example of his preference for floral designs: 'Il n'utilise gure que les fleurettes parcimonieusement disposes pour la dcoration de ses siges, d'une ligne svre, mais toujours harmonieuse' (J. Nicolay, L'art et la manire des matres bnistes Franais au XVIIIe sicle, Paris, 1956, pp. 313-314). A related fauteuil de bureau is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Franais du XVIIIe Sicle, Paris, 1989, p. 563. A similar example, also stamped E. Meunier was sold anonymously at Perrin-Royre-La Jeunesse, Versailles, 5 April 1992, lot 66.
