Lot Essay

The design and its overall shape suggest that this armoir was made in the vicinity of Brunswick, as the typical inlaid panels found on the doors can be related to similar work executed in Brunswick during the 1730s, and can be compared to an armoire of 1720/30 illustrated in H. Kreisel, Die Kunst des deutschen Mbels, Munich, 1970, vol. II, fig. 101. A related model, with similar inlay, yet of simpler shape, was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 16 May 1996, lot 112.
