The ray-veneered tablet on this commode's faade displays a medallion celebrating lyric poetry depicting a lady seated on her couch and mourning the death of a sparrow. It recalls the celebrated ode of Catullus of the death of his wife's favourite sparrow. The pearl-festooned frieze, celebrating Peace and Beauty, depicts dove-borne tazze of fruit and flowers, while the side medallions celebrate the harvest with corn-sheaves being carried home by a girl with a sickle.
A comparable commode of circa 1790, attributed to Ignazio and Luigi Revelli, in the Salotto Rosso, at Stupinigi near Turin, is illustrated in N. Gabrielli, ed., Museo dell' Arredamento, Stupinigi, La Palazzina di caccia, Turin, 1966 fig. 95). This lot can also be related to a similar pair of commodes after Giuseppe Maggiolini, in the Durini Collection, Milan (G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile Intarsiato di Giuseppe Maggiolini, Milan, 1957, pl. LXXIIa).
An almost identical commode attributed to Ignazio and Luigi Revelli, with a central medallion depicting classical figures and with identical scrolling foliate borders framing the two drawers inlaid sans traverse, and depicting the same female figure carrying a corn sheaf to the sides, formerly in the collection of Comte et Comtesse d'Arbigny, was offered in Paris, tude Blanchet-Joron-Derem, 29 June 1998, lot 201; while another closely related commode was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 19 May 1977, lot 92.
