PERSIA, SECOND QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
Of typical form with separate cover, the rectangular base with four feet, the cover with central panel painted depicting the battle of Chaldiran, Shah Isma'il attacking the Turks, the rounded coved sides with a variety of scenes from the epics including Farhad chipping away at the mountain, Khosraw discovering Shirin bathing, and Bahram Gur's Master Shot, divided in places by portrait roundels, a band of floral cartouches below, the interior depicting the enthroned Fath 'Ali Shah with attendants, a king from the Shahnameh enthroned to his right, surrounded by an appropriate assortment of lounging ladies, the base painted on the sides with scenes from the Shahnameh including Rustem and Sohrab, Bizhan being puilled from the pit, and Rustem's battle with the white div, the interior plain, slight restoration to top, re-lacquered, two feet slightly loose
