The large rectangular box with removable pen tray and separate compartment for inkwells, exterior surfaces with a finely painted design of stylised peony blossoms in gold on black ground surrounded by saz leaves, the inside of the lid and tray with a sparser design of gold medallions and arabesques, the lid with gold and turquoise grip, slight damages and restorations
