Lieutenant-Colonel J.W. De Kock not only commanded a Fort during the siege of Mafeking but as an Attorney often appeared at the Courts of Summary Jurisdiction. He defended Lieutenant Murchison at his Court Martial for the murder of the journalist E.G. Parslow and often defended natives who faced capital charges.
