Trooper W. Snow was severely wounded during the attack on Game Tree on 26.12.1899 and died of his wounds in Mafeking on 23.1.1900. The attack on Game Tree was an ill-conceived idea of Baden-Powell's and led to three Officers and 21 men being killed and one Officer and 22 men wounded without any tangible strategic result. Sergeant Martineau and Trooper Ramsden, both of the Protectorate Regiment, won Victoria Crosses for saving wounded men under fire.
