Private J. Cowley was wounded at Nooitgedacht on 13.12.1900.

General Clements' camp at Nooitgedacht was attacked before daylight by a Boer force some 4000 strong. The combined Boer forces of De la Rey and Botha attacked with such swift surprise and ferocity that four Companies of the Northumberland Fusiliers, who were holding the ridges on the Magliesberg Mountain overlooking the camp, were completely overwhelmed and captured with the added losses of 100 killed and wounded.
