Lot Essay

Private T. McCarthy was landed from H.M.S. Naiad for service in South Africa in mid-November 1901, subsequently qualifying for the clasps 'Cape Colony' and 'South Africa 1901'.

In the same ship he went on to qualify for the Africa General Service Medal for 'Somaliland 1902-04' and was discharged in late 1910. Mobilised with the Royal Fleet Reserve on the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, McCarthy received a number of seagoing appointments, latterly in Armed Merchantmen, finally coming ashore in February 1919.
