Lot Essay

2nd Lieutenant Sidney William Cuthbert was accidentally shot at Simon's Town on 24.2.1902 and died of his wounds the following day. Educated at Wellington College, he received his commission in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in July 1900 while still at school. He left England on 1.2.1902 with the 3rd Battalion and arrived with them in South Africa on 19.2.1902. His death occurred just six days later at the age of 19 years.
