The Duke of Edinburgh's Own Edinburgh Royal Garrison Artillery (Militia) was embodied on 7.5.1900, the last such time having been during the Indian Mutiny. It sent a Service Company of five Officers and 154 N.C.Os and Gunners to South Africa which arrived at Durban on 1.5.1900.

'The Company formed with the Durham R.G.A. Service Company an Artillery Brigade known as the Durham and Edinburgh and was encamped on Congella flats about three miles from Durban, taking over duties of a guard of two Officers and 100 men on the prison ship S.S. Catalonia, Town Guard and escort duties, etc. ... [2.12.1900] The Company proceeded to "Tin Town" Camp, Ladysmith and found in conjunction with other troops the guard over the Prisoners of War Camp, manned the surrounding outpost of Ladysmith defence, with detachments from time to time as required at Van Reenan's, Blan Bank, Acton Holmes and Harrismith ... [9.9.1901] the Brigade proceeded to Kakkerstroom to take over 1000 prisoners of war, and escort them to Durban and thence to Bombay.
