Rariorum Africanarum Plantarum, Ad vivum delineatarum, Iconibus ac descriptionibus illustratarum decas prima [...decima]. Amsterdam: Henri Boussire, 1738-1739. 10 parts in 1 volume, 4 (262 x 210mm). Title in red and black with engraved vignette, nine section titles with engraved vignettes. 100 engraved plates, extra-illustrated with a folding engraved portrait of the author by J.Houbraken after J.M. Quinkhard, dated 1736 (Some light browning of plates or offsetting of text into plates, small puncture to inner blank margins of leaves to A2.) Contemporary vellum over pasteboard (spine slightly chipped at head and foot, small puncture to spine). Provenance: Leman Saunders Sloman (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. 'According to Nissen, Burman drew 33 plants from the Codex Simon van der Stel. 34 from the Herbarium Witsenianum, and 92 from the Codex Witsenii; and the artist was the physician Hendrik Claudius of Breslau... Simon van der Stel made an expedition to Namaqualand in 1685-86, Hendrik Claudius accompanying him, and the drawings later came into the posession of Burgomaster Nikolaas Witsen of Amsterdam': Hunt 508; Nissen BBI 302; Pritzel 1390; Stafleu & Cowan 929. .
