'Series title', dedication leaf, volume title (as above). 41 FINE HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES by and after Donovan. (Occasional light spotting.) Near-contemporary half-calf, spine gilt, morocco lettering-pieces, gilt crest surrounded by motto, shield bearing initials 'JVS' (neat repairs to spine, some slight wear to extremities.) Provenance: John Vandeleur Stewart (b.1802, of Rock Hill, armorial bookplate, binding); Mildred Bliss (Dumbarton Oaks, bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, the Dumbarton Oaks copy of this beautiful work, including butterflies and other insects from Australia copied from the collection of Sir Joseph Banks and others. As the the series title makes clear Donovan intended this work to be seen as volume I of a General Illustration of Entomology, volume II being his work on the insects of India.
