John Hunt (1777-1842?)

British Ornithology; containing portraits of all the British Birds including those of Foreign Origin which have become domesticated. Norwich: Bacon & Co., 1815-1822. 3 volumes bound in 2 (1 vol.text, 1 vol.plates), 8 (214 x 139mm). 2 engraved titles only (of 3), 4 uncoloured anatomical plates, 180 hand-coloured engraved plates by and after Hunt. (Lacking the 8 uncoloured plates of birds, some general browning and spotting, the browning heavier to about 12 plates.) 19th-century green half morocco gilt, t.e.g. (scuffing to extremities). Provenance: Philip Hammond (armorial bookplate); W.W. (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE. The work was never finished, the text ending in mid-sentence in vol. III and there are 76 plates without text. Copies vary in the number of plates. Apparently it was intended that the work should include 200 plates, but the maximum number of recorded plates (including the 8 rare uncoloured bird plates) is 192 (see the Fattorini copy, sold our rooms, 25 October 1995, lot 20). Mullens & Swann p.305; Nissen IVB 464; Zimmer p.315. (2)
