FLOWN Gemini 5 heat shield segment. Encased in a lucite cylinder 3 in. diameter, 2.5 in. tall, and engraved "Gemini V Aug. 21-28, 1965" at the bottom. The top 1/4 inch of the heat shield has turned black from the intense frictional heat of reentry into the earth's atmosphere. [With:] Typed letter signed by Cooper noting that: "... we were sure glad [ the heat shield] worked so well after 8 days in space".
