This subject is seen as early as the Tang dynasty, as evidenced by the small white marble sculpture in the sale, lot 237. Compare the similar wood carving which appears to be of similar size in the Museum Fr Vlkerkunde, West Germany illustrated by Hai-wai Zhen, Chinese Art in Overseas Collections: Buddhist Sculpture (II), Taiwan, 1990, p. 190, no. 180.
