Lot Essay

Stylistically this figure is similar to another grey stone figure of a bald-headed luohan dated to the Jin or Yuan dynasty and illustrated by O. Sirn, Histoire des Arts Anciens de la Chine, vol. III, La Sculpture de l'poque Han a l'poque Ming, Paris and Brussels, 1930, pl. 115 D. Compare, also, the torso of a similar luohan, his cheek also resting against his hand, dated 1206-1368, illustrated in Fojiao Diaosu Mingpin Tulu (Images of Famous Buddhist Sculpture), Beijing, 1997, p. 592, no. 566.
