Compare the carved cizhou meiping covered with a clear glaze of similar size (43cm.) and shape included in Chinese Ceramics, A Loan Exhibition of One Hundred Selected Masterpieces from Collections in Japan, England, France, and America, Tokyo, 1960, p. 8, fig. 36. Another vase of the same shape and height covered with an amber glaze in the Hakone Art Museum, Japan, is illustrated in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, Tokyo, 1976, vol. I, p. 185, no. 545.
The two lower bands of decoration on this vase and the style of carving are comparable to those on a meiping of more ovoid form with different shaped neck illustrated by M. Sullivan, Chinese Ceramics Bronzes and Jades in the collection of Sir Alan and Lady Barlow, London, 1963, pl. 59. Here, too, the broad upper band of foliate scroll is cut in such a way that it is silhouetted against rather open areas of the background. See, also, the meiping in the Tokyo National Museum illustrated in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, p. 185, fig. 544, where the flower scroll is carved to stand out against the darker background.
The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. P199a29 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
