Each with an arched rectangular back with a simulated flute-inlaid splat terminating in carved flowerheads with ribbed downswept arms and a cane-filled seat with a brown suede cushion on fluted square tapering legs ending in spade feet (2)

Lot Essay

This chair is based on a pattern published in George Hepplewhite's The Cabinet-maker and Upholsterer's Guide, third edition of 1794, pl.1. A closely related chair but lacking the fruitwood inlaid flutes is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (see M.Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1972, p.140, Q/9).
