Lot Essay

This piece closely follows the Antique prototype discovered in the Temple of Isis, Pompeii and exhibited in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples, illustrated in the National Museum of Naples, n.d. circa 1871, plate 91. This stand was widely copied during the 19th century, serving as a model for the baptismal fonts by Luigi and Francesco Monfradini, presented to the Empress Marie-Louise by the City of Milan in 1811, the other for the King of Rome in 1813. See H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, fig. 5.9.1.
