The present work is a sketch for the backdrop that Sutherland had designed for the final scene of The Wanderer, a ballet choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton, with music by Schubert, and first performed in the New Theatre at Sadler's Wells in 1940, with Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn as the principal dancers.
A similar squared-up composition, formerly in the collection of Sir Kenneth Clark, K.C.B. is illustrated in F. Arcangeli, Graham Sutherland, Milan, 1973, no.27.
