A LOUIS XV ENAMELLED VARI-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Charles Le Bastier (fl. 1754-1783), marked, Paris, 1773/1774, with the charge and export discharge marks of Julien Alaterre 1768-1774
Oval box, the cover, four side panels and base enamelled in translucent aubergine-mauve on a vertical engine-turned coin pattern, the lid centred by an oval enamel miniature finely painted in brown camaeu with a couple in classical costumes at an Altar of Love accompanied by an attendant and a putto, within a laurel wreath border, the opaque white enamelled borders of cover and base applied with a twisted gold band forming a wavescroll garland enclosing pellets, the four white enamelled side pilasters applied with gold leaves emerging from lotus flowers, the side rims of the cover similarly adorned with a band of stylized acanthus on a frosted gold band interspersed with seven swirling rosettes
